What Card Game Formats Can You Jam?

Are You New to Card Games? A game jam can be an ideal way to kick-start your interest. Fun, accessible, and often leading to the creation of finished polished games – they offer all these things and more.
Card Games Jams offer various formats for submissions, so be sure to review the rules thoroughly before beginning work on your submission. For instance, you may not be allowed to prepare or submit games prior to their start date or utilize ready-made ones available as of said start date.
Format is a key aspect of gameplay and style in games, so it is crucial that we understand its different types. Some are limited to being played on kitchen tables, while others can be entered in tournaments with specific rules and tiers.
One of the most frequently utilized formats for TCGs, such as Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon, is draft / limited format, which offers players a fun and accessible way to learn new cards while socially playing together with friends. Draft / limited allows players to see multiple card variants without purchasing bulk booster packs – an excellent way to discover and expand your knowledge!
Historic is another popular form of draft/limited format, featuring older sets in its metagame. It can be an efficient way to familiarize oneself with another format without investing heavily in booster packs; however, adapting a deck from Standard for Historic can prove tricky.
Explore may also offer an alternative, a more recent format that replicates historical experience. Not only can this give you access to new decks of cards, but you may even discover old favorites within its folds!
At this jam, you’ll be challenged to create a game without a clear theme in mind; rather, it should incorporate both game mechanics and gameplay elements to produce something fun, engaging, and fitting onto a business card. Aim to fit as much art and detail into this space as possible for maximum fun and engagement!

For newcomers to game development, a game jam can be an invaluable way to discover how to craft their first game. A jam provides you with an opportunity to experiment with new engines, languages, or platforms while learning from experienced developers as well as participating participants.
At this event, you may work either alone or as part of a four-person team to produce any project ranging from simple games to full RPGs using any engine or programming language, provided it fulfills the requirements of this competition.
Create as many versions of your game as you’d like and submit all to the competition, but be mindful that each entry fee covers game development costs.
The submission deadline is the third Sunday in February at 12:00 UTC; the voting period starts one week later.
During the voting period, you can modify any files submitted for voting. This includes updating your written description, uploading screenshots, genre tags and colors/fonts used on the game’s page.
An original game must be designed from scratch during a game jam, though paper prototypes can also be included as part of your submission. These do not need to be exact replicas but should demonstrate gameplay mechanics and be ready for feedback from judges.
Game Jams offer a safe space for experimentation and creativity that facilitates learning through play (Goddard et al., 2014; Kultima & Laiti, 2019; Merilainen, 2019). They’re especially suitable for students as they offer opportunities for active engagement, systems thinking, and social problem-solving (Kultima & Laiti 2016; Merilainen 2019).
