Studies conducted by our group demonstrated that children who played numerical card games showed significant improvements in numeral identification and non-symbolic magnitude understanding when compared with children playing non-numerical shape and color-matching games as controls. These findings extend our previous work in which we demonstrated that children who participated in magnitude comparison and number line estimation games improved their symbolic magnitude understanding. Furthermore, this intervention significantly boosted domain-general executive functioning skills that are critical for numeracy and mathematics achievement.
However, our intervention was limited in its ability to isolate whether improvements in numerical and executive functioning skills were due to games or ongoing instruction. To address these concerns, we designed a follow-up assessment of these skills over an extended period of time and compared their effects.
To develop their numerical and executive functioning skills, children who played the numerical card game were provided with a deck of non-symbolic numeral playing cards for training purposes. After which, they played various games that required them to make decisions based on their corresponding numeral and non-symbolic magnitude information; additionally, they were reminded after each turn that there was also an associated numerical number word that they could use as an additional cue when making their decisions about values of cards.
